New Year, New Opportunity – Resume Tips

Are you dedicated to finding a new opportunity this year?  One with more growth?  Or different challenges?  We are now into February, and you spent ALL of January telling yourself you were going to finally update and put together your resume – but you haven’t.  As you embark on assembling your CV keep these tips in mind, to help your resume rise to the top of the stack.

  1. Focus on needs of the employer. A one stop shop resume approach is not the best way to go.  Tailor your resume for each opportunity you are applying for – even if they are within the same industry.  Make sure that it addresses the “wants” of the job.
  2. Detailed, but brief. The employer wants to hear about your background and how you can effect a positive change on their organization, but please don’t produce Pride & Prejudice.  More is not better.  The purpose of a resume is to pique interest so that they will invite you to interview.  Use bullet points, and list accomplishments – quantify achievements vs. a laundry list of every daily task.  I would recommend no more than two pages.
  3. Summary of qualifications. Include a brief but powerful summary that entices the end user to read on in your resume.  This is NOT an objective, but rather six to ten sentences highlighting your experience.  The summary should convince the employer of your talent.
  4. Be honest. I see and review a lot of resumes, and I am surprised at the number of individuals who exaggerate on their resume.  Of course you want to secure the interview and the new career opportunity, but by exaggerating you are putting yourself in a difficult situation when references are completed and as the interview process unfolds.
  5. Consistent formatting. I review resumes daily and I am often surprised by the lack of consistency within the document.  i.e. – spacing, font, bullets, etc.  Remain consistent throughout the document.  Little things like this can make a big impression on the employer.

Best of luck as you sit down to assemble your resume.

New Year Brings New Outlook

The change of calendar combined with a bit of a holiday break from the job often brings a fresh perspective – and a heightened determination to make a job change.

Many hospice and home health executives are feeling overtaxed as they have felt stretched to the brink to do more with less. These talented executives have resisted making a job change these past couple of years due to the poor economy. Believing the economy is in a less perilous place, many executives now feel emboldened to initiate a job transition.

Those open to new career opportunities are fortunate: The demand for experienced hospice and home health executive talent remains strong as our sector continues to expand.

If you are interested in learning more about new career opportunities, our website is a helpful resource. See some of the executive searches we are currently leading.

Feel free to also reach out to any of the members of the executive search practice, personally.  You may also elect to send your resume via our website.

In addition to these very practical resources, we will continue to share insights about the hospice and home health sector on a regular basis via this blog and various speaking engagements. Stay tuned and continue to check this blog as it will be updated regularly.

Happy New Year!

Are You Using Social Media to Find a Job?

Are you using Social Media to Find a Job?  Social Media won’t find a job for you – you need to put it to work.  So let’s take a look at some tips for maximizing Social Media in your career search.

  1. LinkedIn – Are you on it?  If not, get on it.  Recruiters are starting to use LinkedIn as a top site for sourcing talent – especially within the healthcare industry.  Utilize all features that a free account offers:  complete your profile to “100%”, join “groups” and ask for “recommendations”.  Recruiters and companies often will not even look at a profile without recommendations.
  2. Twitter – If you are on it use it purposefully!   Be proactive – not reactive.  Twitter allows you a great way to connect with both recruiters and employees that work at companies you are targeting.  Complete your profile and add an avatar of yourself (not a clown or Homer Simpson) – a professional photo or icon that represents your work.
  3. Blog Link – If you have a blog, post a link to it on your LinkedIn page and update it on a regular basis.  Each time you post a blog on LinkedIn it updates your profile – also the most current post will be in the weekly update emails that go out to your connections.  Be involved – don’t just blog, but participate by commenting – leaving contextual comments here and there on industry specific websites.

It is our experience that companies will check out a potential applicant via LinkedIn prior to interviewing or hiring – keep it current, professional, and be active.  We often create a page because everyone else in the office has one, and then we neglect it.  Whether you are actively searching for a job or just keeping your options open – stay on top of your Social Media outlets.
